CSU undergraduates: Interested in working for the blog this summer? The CSU Office of Research has generously funded two undergraduate summer 2015 research positions for Social Studies @ CSU!
Dr. Rose and Dr. Souther are sponsoring a project called “History Speaks: Using Oral Histories to Teach Historical Thinking.” This project focuses on the uses of oral history interviews and methods in secondary classrooms as well as the logging systems used to catalog oral history interviews in the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection. Each student will publish essays in the “In the Classroom” section of the blog and work with Dr. Souther to develop a logging system that is useful for educators.

Position Title: Social Studies/History Undergraduate Summer Research Assistant
Eligibility: Undergraduates who are currently in good standing, who completed at least 6 credit hours in the spring term and who intend to return in the fall for at least 6 credit hours
FWS Status: Non-FWS
Pay Rate: $12 / hour
Days & Times Needed: Students will be required to work 25 hours per week. Students will meet weekly with Dr. Rose, otherwise the schedule is flexible.

Description: Professors Rose and Souther in the Department of History seek 2 undergraduate student researchers to develop a series of essays for the project “History Speaks: Using Oral Histories to Teach Historical Thinking” for the Social Studies program blog, Social Studies @ CSU (http://socialstudies.clevelandhistory.org). The successful candidates will: 1) research the pedagogical uses of oral histories and oral history methods; 2) review oral history resources for teaching social studies; 3) create lesson plans for secondary level teachers from existing oral history collections, including the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection; 4) author a series of essays for publication on the Social Studies @ CSU blog; and 5) create and implement a logging system in the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection that aligns with Ohio State and Common Core content standards. The successful candidates must be able to commit to 25 hours/week for 12 weeks (starting May 11, 2015), attend weekly meetings with the Drs. Rose and Souther, and present their findings at the Provost’s Engaged Learning Research Poster session on September 3, 2015 from 10 am-2 pm. Social Studies, History, or Education majors as well as students in related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply.
Required Skills: excellent historical research skills, excellent writing skills, experience with educational technology and social media, detail-oriented and self-motivated, ability to work independently.
Preferred Skills: experience with the WordPress, experience with oral history methods
