Social Studies @ CSU & CPHDH are hiring!

CSU undergraduates: Interested in honing your history research skills this summer?  The CSU Office of Research has generously funded two undergraduate summer 2016 research positions for Social Studies @ CSU and the Center for Public History and Digital Humanities (CPHDH)!
Dr. Rose and Dr. Souther are leading a project called “Protest Voices: Using Activist Oral Histories to Teach Historical Thinking”  This project focuses on collecting Cleveland area activist oral histories for archiving in the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection.  Topics include Anti-Vietnam activism and local activism around issues in Central America during the Cold War. Students will learn how to clip these interviews, link them to the Ohio State Social Studies Standards and publish lesson plans and essays in the “In the Classroom” section of this blog, as well to the History Speaks site created by the 2015 USRA researchers.

Eligibility: Undergraduates who are currently in good standing, who completed at least 6 credit hours in the spring term and who intend to return in the fall for at least 6 credit hours
FWS Status: Non-FWS
Pay Rate: $12 / hour
Days & Times Needed: Student will be required to work 25 hours per week. Student will meet weekly with Dr. Rose and /or Dr. Souther, otherwise the schedule is flexible.

Description: Professors Rose and Souther in the Department of History seek 2 undergraduate student researchers to develop a series of essays for the project “Protest Voices: Using Activist Oral Histories to Teach Historical Thinking” for the Social Studies program blog, Social Studies @ CSU (http://socialstudies.clevelandhistory.org). The successful candidates will: 1) Learn and apply oral history methods; 2) Contact and interview subjects; 2) Archive the completed interviews and logs in the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection; 3) Research the historical background of events covered in the interview process; 4) Create audio clips for the History Speaks site aligning clips with the Ohio State Social Studies Standards; 5) Create lesson plans for secondary level teachers from the completed interviews; and 6) Author a series of essays for publication on the Social Studies @ CSU blog. The successful candidates must be able to commit to 25 hours/week for 12 weeks (starting May 11, 2016), attend weekly meetings with the Drs. Rose and Souther, and present their findings at the Provost’s Engaged Learning Research Poster session in Fall 2016. Social Studies, History, or Education majors as well as students in related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply.
Required Skills: excellent historical research skills, excellent writing skills, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to travel for oral history interviews, experience with educational technology and social media, detail-oriented and self-motivated, ability to work independently.
Preferred Skills: experience with the WordPress platform, experience with oral history methods
