Mark Souther and I are excited to announce our second collaboration sponsored by the CSU Office of Research Undergraduate Summer Research Program (USRA): “Protest Voices: Using Activist Oral Histories to Teach Historical Thinking.”
This project builds on the successful combination of oral histories and pedagogy which led to the educator-­oriented website “History Speaks” (historyspeaks.clevelandhistory.org) in our USRA 2015 project. For the 2016 “Protest Voices” project, undergraduate researchers Chris Morris and Amanda Gedeon will conduct oral history interviews with local peace activists, linking K-­12 educators with a new collection of primary sources featuring global interconnections.
These interviews will be archived at the Cleveland Regional Oral History Collection (CROHC) EngagedScholarship site (http://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/crohc). In addition, the researchers will add clips aligned with Ohio Department of Education Social Studies Standards to the “History Speaks” website. These new clips will focus on connecting local and national events to world history, an area that will enhance student engagement with the material and foster historical thinking.
